I was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, England in 1971. Since early childhood I've had an unstoppable urge to make, draw and create. This passion continued throughout school and led me to study art at college, particularly focusing on my love of illustration. I graduated in 1992 with a BA (Hons) degree in graphic design from the University of Wales.
I worked for many years within the newspaper industry and after redundancy I started freelancing as a digital illustrator which enabled me to work around my two young daughters. Creatively I was not completely happy or fulfilled. When both my children started full time education I began to search for an alternative creative outlet, one that would be more 'hands on', something that could get me away from the computer screen and quench my artistic thirst.
My wire journey began when I was inspired by the late Alex Calder's quirky wire portraits, I loved the simplicity and expressiveness of the wire. So I borrowed a small pair of pliers and bought some florist wire and started experimenting. That was 9 years ago. Since then I have been developing my skills, experimenting with varying gauges and different metals which have led to a wide variety of private commissions ranging from a quantum computer to a rollercoaster. I've worked with set designers, interior designers and art consultants both in the US, France and the UK.
I'll only retire when my fingers stop being able to move and manipulate wire, when that sad day comes I'll be forced to look for another way to channel my creativity, but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy this journey while it lasts.
